Abbreviated locally as ‘KK’, the city is the seventh largest in Malaysia, hosting a population over 450 million people that compose a diverse variety of ethnic groups including native tribes of coastal and highland origin.

Surrounded by lovely beaches, tropical islands, and picturesque landscapes, KK is a charming modern city offering international-standard hotels and resorts. KK is also the gateway to one of Southeast Asia’s tallest mountains, Mount Kinabalu. It serves as the gateway to the rest of Sabah.

Sandakan began to prosper in 1879, British built a new settlement and developed Sandakan into a commercial and trading center, making it the main administrative center for North Borneo.

British encouraged the migration of Chinese and British Hong Kong to develop the economy of Sandakan. It was nicknamed Little Hong Kong due to the strong presence of ethnic Chinese migration from Hong Kong (mainly Cantonese and Hakka).

Sandakan is also well-known for ecotourism (Orangutan Sepilok rehabilitation station, Turtle Islands Park, Gomantong Caves which famous for bird’s nest).
